New Church In South East Missouri

Exchange logo.1000

Our new church, The Exchange Community, has been meeting monthly through the summer.  We’ve had three worship gatherings.  We’ve had many people, who haven’t been to church in a long time, come and check us out.  We are now taking that next step of faith by starting a weekly worship gathering on September 8th at the Creative Edge.

Through the summer we talked about the three values of a GCM Collective church:

  1. What is The Gospel?
  2. The Mission of God.

Unfortunately, we had audio problems and so we don’t have a video for our messages on the Gospel and Mission.

We will talk on September 8th on Why a New Church?  We will talk about why in, of all places, South East Missouri, do we need a new church?  You’ll get an understanding of the come-as-you are culture that we’re trying to create.  You’ll see what makes this new church community distinct amongst the other churches in our communities.  You’ll also see why this new type of church is needed.

Please pray for us as we start this new church to reach many more people with the love and message of Jesus Christ.

Check out and like our Facebook page.

Come Die With Me

The Scriptures are often full of calls to humble oneself, take up your cross, deny yourself, decrease in importance so Christ can increase, to lose your life in order to find it in Christ, to become less of a focus so more of Christ can be seen through you.  We often don’t find fulfillment in Christ or success in mission because we desperately are afraid of dying. Watch this short video from Jeff Vandertelt:

We’ve got nothing to really lose, and, surprisingly, nothing to gain either, in living life on mission.  We have everything already!  In Jesus we already have the eternal love, favor, and kingdom of our Heavenly Father! We have his unconditional acceptance no matter how we perform, no matter what we accomplish, no matter how we fail.  The only thing we DO have to gain in dying to ourselves and living for God’s purposes is the precious life of someone lost who can be found through YOU.   And what’s funny, is when we lay down our lives, desires, and preferences for the good of God’s kingdom and the benefit of others, we actually find life that if abundant, full, and meaningful!  Our doubts, anxieties, and problems fade away because our eyes are off ourselves and are placed where they were created to be, on our Savior and on others.  We’re then filled with the greatest joy of being on the grandest adventure of all as we join in Christ’s mission.

Questions:

  1. If what Jeff says in this video is true, how should it change your life, your ministry, your priorities?
  2. What do you need to die to in order to live for God’s glory and the salvation of others?
  3. How is Jesus the answer to all the fears in your heart on this issue?  How is he greater than the things you will give up?

5 Ways to Be Missional This Labor Day

Labor day is one of those days of rest and rejuvenation.  For our Nation its a yearly rhythm of rest that we all enjoy, but can also be leveraged for gospel purposes.  Below are 5 ways you can be missional this Labor Day

  1. Hold a neighborhood barbeque.  Invite everyone on the block.  If you’ve never done this in your neighborhood, don’t ask them to bring all the food.  Partner with a few members of your Missional Community or Small group to pay for the meal.  For those who have participated in the past, encourage them to partner with you in bringing a side dish to share.
  2. If you own a boat or have a place at the lake, Labor Day is a great day for a little cross-pollination.  Invite a couple from your Missional Community and invite another couple who are unchurched or dechurched.  It’s a great time to introduce friends and build trust between your Christian community and those who don’t yet believe.
  3. Invite your unchurched friends to join you and another Christian in Something you love.  If you love to camp or fish.  If you just take the opportunity of Labor Day to hit up a good matinée and some lunch, invite unchurched this is another great opportunity for cross-pollination and trust building.
  4. Show care to first responders.  A lot of people have Labor Day off.  Some work it every year.  Show love to your first responders.  Bring by food or gift packages for your firemen or police officers.  Talk to the Fire chief or police chief and see if your Missional Community, Small Group, or church can set up some grills and serve them a meal.
  5. If school doesn’t start for your community until after Labor Day, serve the underprivileged about to go back to school.  Pay a beautician or barber to come in and offer free haircuts.  Collect and hand out backpacks and school supplies.

Why Do Our Children Leave the Church?

Why do so many people—with incredible conversions—parent children who leave Christianity? History overflows with great saints whose offspring lose faith:
•Samuel was a mighty prophet of God. His sons were a mess.
•David was a man after God’s own heart. His children were a disaster.
•Harvard, Yale, and Princeton were founded on the gospel. Now they lead the opposition.

I’ve witnessed dozens of families (churches, ministries, and prayer groups) who began with a furious fire of love for God whose next generation couldn’t blow a smoke ring.

Our children lose fire because of our mother-of-all-assumptions; we assume the gospel. This is how the gospel is lost…..Read More Here

I’d add to this that our children don’t see what we profess effect the lives we lead.  So we forget about he Gospel or we don’t allow the Gospel to be the motivating factor in our lives.

How do you relate to your members of your MCs?  How do you relate the faith to your children.  Is it “This do…then God will?”  Or is it, “God did…so we can?”

Hold On To The Promises!

We walk by faith and not by sight.  Jesus said  being a disciple would be an exciting thing (Life to the full) yet also dangerous (Take up your cross and follow me).  As we walk further in planting The Exchange Community with starting a weekly service the Enemy fights back.  Yet I remember that God is faithful, we can trust in him.  God is faithful, we can follow him.  Why is that?  We can trust him because all of his promises are fulfilled in Jesus.  His victory is assured!

Check out this song that’s really speaking to me based off of Romans 8:

True Community

The Exchange Community had its second monthly gathering. The first service we talked about the Gospel. In this gathering we talked about True Community.

Our third and final monthly gathering will be August 28th at the Creative Edge.  Then we’ll start weekly gatherings starting the 8th of September.  Please pray that God would continue to grow his church and lead us in discipling those we reach.

Three Great Books On The Gospel and Missional Communities

Here are three books that have been instrumental in helping me understand the Gospel and how it shapes Communities on Mission.  Our friends from Soma alerted us of this deal.  These three Tim Chester and Steve Timmis books on Kindle $1.99 each!

Dealing with Pride in Disciple Making

Here’s a great short video from David Platt and Multiply on how pride sneaks into our disciple making.

Questions:

  • What suprises you about what he says concerning pride?
  • Can Pride really be an issue when we doubt our own abilities?

I wonder If Sunday School Is Destroying Our Kids

The Bible is not primarily a story about you!  It’s a Story about Jesus.  Check out this article from Belief’s of the Heart:

“Several years ago I met with a woman distraught by her son’s rejection of Christianity.

She said, “I did everything I could to raise him right. I taught him to be like the ‘heroes of faith,’ with the faithfulness of Abraham, the goodness of Joseph, the pure heart of David, and the obedience of Esther.”

She wondered why he rejected Christianity.

I wondered why it took him so long.

Here is how we destroy the gospel message

Look at almost any Sunday school curriculum. You’ll find:

  • Abraham was faithful, and God made him the father of a nation. So be faithful like Abraham.
  • Joseph was a good little boy (unlike his “bad” brothers), and God made him Prime Minister of Egypt. So be good like Joseph.
  • David had a pure heart (unlike his brothers), and God made him King of Israel. So have a pure heart like David.
  • Esther was an obedient girl. God made her Queen of Persia and she saved God’s people. So be obedient like Esther.
  • Finally, if we fail to be good, Jesus will forgive us (a “P.S.” tacked onto the end).

What’s so bad about these Sunday school lessons?

Nothing really. Except that they lie about God, they lie about these “heroes of the faith,” they lie about the Bible, and they lie about the gospel….”
